What we refer to as a Zen garden, started in Japan since the Heian period (794-1185). These Japanese rock gardens offer a landscape of meticulously composed features such as moss, pruned trees, rocks, and gravel or sand that is racked to represent waves in water. The idea is to create a perception and essence of nature in it’s natural form but not in it’s actual appearance to allow for meditation on the true meaning of existence.
